Art from the Natural & Remembered World
Brandywine Farmstead & Studio is the creative practice of artist, writer, and gardener Kiah Treece. Inspired by the living landscape, early folk art, alchemical imagery, botanical lore, and the long history of women making things by hand, my work explores the places where nature, memory, symbolism, and everyday life meet.
In the Studio
I’m drawn to the visual language of things made long before art and everyday life became separate categories: folk paintings, quilts and samplers, botanical illustrations, old herbals, alchemical drawings, household objects, and the decorative and practical work historically made by women.
Those influences find their way into paintings and objects alongside what I encounter outside my own door—flowers going to seed, weeds at the edge of the garden, strange shapes in the woods, changing light, birds, insects, and the colors of a particular season.
The result is work that feels both familiar and a little mysterious: part observation, part history, part imagined world.

The Mercantile
The Mercantile is home to the other things that grow out of life at Brandywine: small-batch handmade objects, jewelry, botanical goods, and vintage finds chosen for their beauty, usefulness, or history.
At the Farm
The farm and studio aren't separate parts of Brandywine.
The garden supplies subjects, materials, colors, questions, and a way of measuring time. Cosmos, woad, walnut, flowers, weeds, seeds, and soil make their way into my work both literally and indirectly.
Growing things has also changed the way I think about making things. Both require attention. Both involve uncertainty. Both ask me to participate without having complete control over what happens next.
Brandywine is where I explore that relationship through painting, writing, gardening, natural materials, and whatever else I’m curious about.
